Why Swinney is correct, so correct, on nuclear power

The Herald today, above and front page.

The facts about nuclear power underlying Swinney’s rational, scientific evidence-based views:

  1. Ah, by Disabled-Seaman Martin Williams I see… https://archive.ph/79mav, as one comment more eloquently put it – “Lobby group for profit gets free rein in the Herald as its self concerned ranting allows Williams a lazy anti SNP article

Why would a country energy sufficient from renewables need nuclear. And don’t give me the old childish nonsense of the wind not blowing. Hydro allows that energy to be stored

Not that Williams opens a serious discussion about any of that. Daily Express is where he belongs”

The poisoned criticism comes from one Thomas James Greatrex, whose name you may recall as the Labour’s MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West before being booted out in 2015, walking straight into the new job in 2016 as CEO of the Nuclear Industry Association, which is indeed a lobby group with obvious connections to the Labour Party…

Presumably when Michael Shanks gets the boot, he’ll follow a similar gravy train, it seems to be the way….

  2. Scotland should be investing in hydrogen production for all the excess renewable power in preference to exporting it.

    1. ” Scotland should be investing in hydrogen production for all the excess renewable power in preference to exporting it ” – I mean no offence by questioning why storing hydrogen and at best recovering 40% of the original energy is a good idea ?

Most of the justification for hydrogen in Scotland stems from our inability to directly export to Europe because London has “arranged” european interconnects to be only from England.

An Orkney pilot plant absorbs excess energy to produce hydrogen running some of Orkney Council’s vans – Were it not for Orcadians waiting decades to get their mainland power link upgraded and getting a deaf ear, hydrogen would never have entered the discussion, and in truth the pilot plant uses only a tiny fraction of what is “shut- down” on command from Orkney’s overflowing energy.

Look up Steve Keen for a straightforward Aussie explanation on the hokum over hydrogen, it is most fascinating.

Or perhaps a more recent analysis from a ‘market’ perspective….. https://www.youtube.com/live/w0Q9cuF8zKg

  3. Reflecting on what is being criticised in The Herald as an ‘ideological ban’ – aka another supposed SNP-bad:

Using Eurostat information in its report entitled ‘Shedding light on energy in the EU – 2023 edition’ (see https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/interactive-publications/energy-2023#types-energy-consumed )

Based on 2021 data, yes the significance of nuclear energy is particularly high in France (76% of total national energy production), Belgium (70%) and Slovakia (60%). Neither France or Belgium have been ‘blessed’ with indigenous oil & gas resources thus their past investment in nuclear power for energy security reasons. The notable use of nuclear power plants in Sweden and Finland probably has similar origins.

However, the following countries have so far opting to have no domestic electricity generation from a nuclear source: Malta, Cyprus, Poland, Ireland, Greece, Estonia, Italy (at least for now), Latvia, Portugal, Croatia, Lithuania, Austria, Denmark, Luxembourg. Also, Norway – outside the EU – has no nuclear generation.

So many bad politicians across Europe maintaining bad ‘ideological bans’ it seems!
