Labour pushing their pet prof ‘under a bus?’

Prof Arthur Bloom, who died in 1992, had been based in Cardiff and was one of the UK’s leading haematologists

In the Times Higher Education, today:

Infected blood: how academics both caused and exposed tragedy Report into scandal highlights danger of relying on singular sources of knowledge, in contrast to inquiry itself, which utilised vast range of expertise to get to the bottom of what happened. Particularly criticised was Arthur Bloom, a professor in haematology at what was then the University of Wales College of Medicine, now part of Cardiff University, whose views were said to have been “overly influential”.

Last week, on BBC Wales:

The report also heavily criticises the influence and actions of Prof Bloom, who led the Cardiff Haemophilia Centre. It said his views “overly influenced the way the DHSS viewed the emergence of Aids” and the threat posed to people with bleeding disorders.

Not mentioned anywhere, how, why and by whom was the Cardiff-based Bloom appointed as the sole expert? The Labour Prime Minister when the deal to use the blood product was signed in 1976, was James Callaghan, Labour MP for a Cardiff constituency from 1945 to 1987. Was Bloom a man who could be trusted to defend the Labour Government’s cost-cutting blood programme based on infected US prisoner paid-for donations by selective research reading?

Think of our Prof Pennington and, in sharp contrast, the honest Prof Sridhar castigated as pro-SNP by the opposition?

  1. Dead Men tell no tales ! Labour will throw anyone under the Campaign Bus if it gets them another few votes . Corbyn and Diana Abbot are next for that treatment during this campaign – Starmer needs to distance himself from anything remotely tinged with red . ( Surprised he hasn’t dropped the ‘ keir’ from his names and adopted ”Maggie ” instead )
