The presenter was discussing education in Scotland with former SNP leader Alex Salmond.
The BBC’s Sunday Politics breached broadcasting rules with misleading claims made by presenter Andrew Neil, a watchdog has found.
The host claimed during an interview with former Scottish National Party leader Alex Salmond that “after a decade of SNP rule, one in five Scots pupils leave primary school functionally illiterate”.
Media watchdog Ofcom has found that his statistical claim was not accurate or based on any official source.
Following a complaint about the false statistic, an investigation found that the claim misled viewers during the build-up to elections in 2017.
The TV-News article goes on to report that:
The BBC’s subsequent handling of the complaint has also been criticised by Ofcom. The watchdog found that not only was the claim unfounded, but that the BBC has erroneously pointed to sources to try and give it some factual basis, and offered “conflicting explanations on the source from which Mr Neil’s statement was derived”.
It is a pity that the TV-News article could not have been more forthright – for example “Andrew Neil caught lying in election interview” might have made the point more clearly.
The BBC might also improve their reputation if they applied this proverb to the people they employ “a man is known by the company he keeps”.

One in twenty people are on the spectrum. Some may never be able to read and write. They have other talents that can be accomplished with proper diagnosis and support. Using computers and other support put in place. Neil has no knowledge of diversity.
Scotland has one of the best education systems in the world. It could be even better without Westminster gross interference. Wasting Scottish revenues that could be better spent. The Tories cut education £6Billion a year. £50Billion. Cut welfare £16Billion. Cut NHS did not increase funding. Wasted £Billions on Hinkley Point, HS2, decommissioning nuclear. Cut taxes and caused Brexit. Wasting £Billions.
Neil giving reports about work shy in Scotland. Thatcher was taking the equivalent of £Billions in Oil & Gas revenues to fund London S/El Building Canary Wharf and 26 miles of container Tilbury Docks. Funding bankers that fund the Tory Party. Cutting the Scottish block Grant and leaving Scotland in poverty. Unemployment was 15% in Scotland. Thatcher kept it secret under the Official Secrets Act. Interest rates at 17%. Inflation at 15%.
In Scotland 30% of pupils go to uni from school. 25% mature students. 7% EU student and foreign student, paying the full cost. The highest number in the world. Next is Canada. 56%. US 40% take higher degrees. Scotland has more uni per population in the world. 15. Colleges and apprenticeships. More support teachers and class room assistants. There needs to be more training in additional needs and diagnosis for teachers and staff. In the last ten years improvements in medical sciences have led to better understanding of diversity.
Neil is an ignoramous. A Brexiteer living in France. A total hypocrite. Can’t read a balance sheet or analyse statistics. Common in the BBC. Totally disgusting. He was involved with an escort woman. Typical Tory Thatcherite.

Neil’s stint at GB News as Chairman and part time presenter…..didn’t last long did it.
In 2020 there was much fanfare re the launch of this supposed ‘alternative’ news channel……with Neil at the forefront in promoting it and playing an integral part in it as a new , licenced to broadcast, news channel in the UK …..which was promoted as a ‘real’ and ‘better’ alternative to his former employer’s output, as in the BBC, to news that they produced as a MSM news channel…..
It finally launched in June 2021 with him as Chairman and two weeks after it launched he, Neil, announced he would be taking a break (which lasted months)….a break after two weeks LOL……then in September 2021 he, Neil, resigned from GB News……well that was worthwhile for him to do…NOT…LOL
When launched it, GB News, was beset by technical difficulties and it was obvious from the outset it was amateurish and thus was open to being ridiculed….plus the standard of many of it’s presenters was way way below par, all they were promoting was a right wing bias and spin and many of them were sadly lacking skills in media broadcasting , which coupled with the technical difficulties , exposed their inexperience and lack of ability (which still exists today via many of them)……it must have been quite an embarrassment for Neil to be associated with it as a ‘high’ profile figure…..especially as he had been (over) promoting it prior to it’s launch as some kind of super duper never seen before real alternative to the news currently on offer via MSM channels…..LOL
Post him leaving it he used excuses for his exit even comparing it, GB News, to Fox news which was a tad ironic considering his own association, as Chairman, of the right wing news magazine The Spectator .
So he tried and he failed in this ‘new’ venture to make the impact he assumed he and it would make…..just like Piers Morgan tried and failed to make an impact via Rupert Murdoch’s Talk TV, now off the air, and now only available as a streaming channel……so he may ridicule and criticise our government in Scotland and too the SNP as a political party…..but he is hardly someone whose judgement is that sound is he or indeed one whose involvement with a newly launched ‘alternate’ news channel proved successful (he failed as it is doing also LOL)….and hardly one considered as being impartial either…..as he has form in his writing and also in what he tweets and retweets that proves where his head and heart lies……extreme right comes to mind.
I think the fate of Talk TV , which I think eventually will also see GB News going the same way, as they GB News, are also experiencing ‘financial’ problems, which shows us all that they, as supposed ‘alternate’ news channels, were and still are surplus to requirement as far as biased news sources are concerned within the UK…..as the UK MSM already provided, and still does , more than enough ample bias and spin to fill the UK airwaves for UK citizens as does too many of it’s UK newspapers for those who still read them ….and Andrew Neil , I am sure, knows it is too….and he also knows that there will always be a place for him there within MSM (hence him be offering a slot at Channel 4 with a new Sunday politics show post leaving GB News)….. another MSM platform for him quelle surprise…..where he will fit in rather nicely to promote his own special kind of intervention (slimy bias and underhanded spin) into (pro) UK politics……look also to the company he keeps socially….pictures of him partying with some of the people who have done their bit to his destroy his UK…e.g. Rupert Murdoch & Boris Johnson…..showing clearly that every picture does tell a story…..
Neil is just another Pro UK mouthpiece…..the quote that ‘at 50 you get the face you deserve’ kinda proves , in Neil’s case, that he has been no angel….and it also proves the kind of person he has been and still is. His life must have been a hard one as tis hard to look at his face and not think OMG ‘he’s no oil painting is he’ …. and what came first….the Brillo pad or his hair LOL……..I mean have you seen recent pictures of him ?…..no cartoon caricature required…..as the real thing does the job so so much better…..would be hard for Cartoonists to make his face or hair any worse in their ‘cartoons’…..LOL
Yes I know….I have descended to that level in being too ‘personal’….but to be really fair…..that’s the level he also descends to always…..so fair’s fair…surely!
