Train drivers, doctors and teachers all expected to work but only in Scotland

By Professor John Robertson

From the Guardian today:

Rail passengers across England will face significant disruption on Friday as train drivers at five operating companies carry out industrial action.

The 24-hour strike will be the first of three days of rolling strike action being taken by the train drivers’ union Aslef, with services on Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, London Northwestern Railway and West Midlands Railway all affected.

Yesterday, from the Guardian:

Teachers in England and Wales could strike again as early as September, according to the head of the UK’s largest education union, who warned of “growing frustration” within the profession as the country heads towards a general election.

And, from the Guardian on March 20, 2024:

Junior doctors in England have voted to keep on striking until the middle of September in their long-running pay dispute, bringing a new wave of disruption to the NHS.

‘Why are these people not striking in Scotland?’ say anxious Labour Party campaigners. Don’t tell us that Humza Yousaf has been treating them with respect and getting deals with them to protect the rest of us? He has? I read the Daily Mail and watch Reporting Scotland every day and I’ve never heard anything about that.

  1. On radio 4 early this morning the newsreader reported that trains across England, Scotland and Wales would be disrupted. Of course what that really meant was that English train companies would be disrupted where they ran services into Scotland and Wales. Later a spokesperson for ASLEF stated that they had no problems in Scotland nor in Wales but they had been unable to talk to companies in England.
