From Alliance Party Councillor, Karl Love, in the Isle of Wight Country Press today:

The situation with Red Funnel, Cross Solent transportation operators, and its cancellations and service disruptions to the Isle of Wight, after many months of negative service impacts, is intolerable and could be putting people’s health and well-being at risk from life threatening illness after residents are missing appointments and treatments, because of cancelled services.

Red Funnel service cancellations are worsening and our whole Island economy, our invest-ability and potential tourist offer is being diminished.

Red Funnel must deliver a good reliable service in these difficult economic conditions or our Island’s reputation and viability will be impacted

This affects every person living on our Island. One expects severe weather impacts but the current situation is appalling.

Yet again this week, following months of service cancellations, Red Funnel report further cancellations because of staffing issues. This is totally unacceptable.

Strangely, for those of us reading daily of CalMac ferries, Karl only blames the private, for profit, Red Funnel company and does not think to blame the government, at any level, for a failure to support them more.

Red Funnel fares typically range from twice those of CalMac to ten times more at peak holiday times.

  1. Two points:

    1. Cllr Love is correct to place responsibility where it truly lies – with the company and its shareholders. The Scottish media only obliquely, if ever, place responsibility on private companies but always seek to find some way of involving the Scottish Government.
Think of the deaths in privately owned care homes during the pandemic – BBC Scotland ensured that the owners had a platform to blame the Scottish Government for deaths in care homes.
    2. The Isle of Wight almost always votes Tory so the Councillor, even though from a non-Tory party is not going to antagonise potential voters by blaming the Government.

    Alasdair Macdonald.
