Why would a Scottish newspaper attack Labour in this election year?

The P&J, the big newspaper in the North-east of Scotland has the above image, viciously attacking Labour.

Everywhere else, across the newspapers and the broadcast media, Anas Sarwar is being wrapped in cotton wool and given nice cups of tea with even nicer questions to answer.

No one needs to tell Scottish reporters how to behave in a year when the Labour attack on SNP seats is central to all their hopes and fears.

So, what’s the P&J up to?

Most of you will know already.

Across P&J Land, Labour are in third place and would need a massive swing to overtake the SNP. Only the Tories, though limping badly, can hold the SNP back, they hope.

Fat chance.

  1. I lost any interest in P&J after their famous headline “NE man lost at sea” when the Titanic sunk!!

Have no further need to believe them now – parochial nonsense.

    1. Th P&J serves a mainly rural farming community whose political allegiances are mostly Tory,so no surprises about attacking Labour. However, seems they have bought into the Labour narrative that the SNP are down and out so attack Labour as the main threat to their party of choice.

      1. The Highlands and North-east are no longer a mainly rural farming community, but that hasn’t dawned on the P&J, leading to the heart-warming situation where the paper’s readership continues to plummet à la Scotsman, Herald and all.

  2. Hoping to steer folks to voting Tory. It’s where Scotland’s oil capital sits, many people residing there who will be from England and will definitely not favour the SNP.
I see the usual story about the dualling of the A9, SNP bad for not doing that. Shame Labour never gave that wee thought, shame Scotland’s transport infrastructure was magnificently neglected for decades, nay, centuries, while Scotland was fully under English rule. Hmm, I wonder why. Look at Norway’s transport system, much in difficult terrain, and it’s tragic to think what Scotland could have had, especially since oil was ‘discovered’.

  5. The P&J is owned by DC Thomson (so its allegiance to the Tories is guaranteed) and is printed in Dundee. Per Wikipedia its circulation isn 2020 was c39,500 and was greater than both the Herald and Scotsman combined.
