Another desperate (no ”) attempt by the Scotsman to turn a problem being tackled by the Scottish Government into a crisis in which their actions seem to be invisible.
Nowhere in that front page do you see this important piece of evidence, of the Scottish Government’s efforts.
On top of free tuition, in Scotland only:
The Bursary
The bursary is for the normal duration of the course that you are undertaking. If you are taking the four-year honours nursing degree course and you are eligible for a bursary, you will receive the full bursary rate for years 1-3 and a 75% bursary for year 4. This reduction also applies to the associated income-assessed allowances (outlined on pages 10-12). This is because year 4 does not cover the full 52 weeks.
The bursary covers the whole year and is a non-income-assessed personal allowance.
For 2023/24 the rate is:
- £10,000 for students annually (£7,500 for eligible students in year 4) paid monthly throughout the course.
Students may also be eligible for one or more of the following allowances:
- £60 Initial Expenses Allowance. This will be included in the first instalment of the bursary.
An income-assessed Dependants Allowance, where appropriate. The maximum amounts you can receive through this allowance are:
- £3,640 for a spouse or cohabitating partner or, if you are single, one adult you have a legal responsibility for with little or no income from any sources.
- £3,640 for the first child where there is no dependant husband or wife, or other dependant adult.
- £557 for each other dependant child.
You may claim the Dependants Allowance for your spouse or cohabiting partner, dependent children and any younger brothers or sisters for whom you have a legal responsibility. If any of these dependants have income of their own, the total amount will be taken into account, but £1,160 will be allowed against the income your dependants have.
England? 24 680 applications for 2024, according to a report in the Independent.
What was that number in the Scotsman for Scottish nursing applicants? 4 650.
You know the drill.
With only a tenth of the population, Scotland might expect to have a tenth of England’s 24 680, or 2 468 but had 4 650, nearly twice as many. New headline?
Sources:

This article gives some figures for the situation in England but fails to mention that Scotland has already implemented what is being proposed as a solution for England I e free tuition and a bursary. Scotland is lumped in with NI and Wales with the comment that applications are falling across the UK.

From that article – “We look forward to the Government providing detail on how it will fund and implement the plan so that the NHS can plan effectively, ensuring it has the right resources in place to meet evolving healthcare needs.”
Good luck with that. Junior doctors in England are on strike again because the Tories won’t negotiate with them regarding their quest for a decent and appropriate salary.
My dog walker gets paid more per hour than they do.

BBC Scotland radio had a report on nursing applications falling drastically… in Scotland of course.

Tragic and very sad for all concerned, just so unnecessary. Tories and their Labour enablers have blood on their hands.

Things are not much better in Labour-run Wales. This report one of 3 CH4 News ran a couple of nights ago. Worth going to their website to watch them

“Desperate outlook from Scotsman Health Correspondent” would appear a more appropriate headline….
Given Joseph Anderson’s profile quotes him as “Cumbria-born journalist exiled in the land of his grandfather”, it seems clear “ITV Border, ITV Tyne Tees, BBC Cumbria, BBC Tees, The Mail, The Westmorland Gazette, The News & Star, Durham County Council” is where he’d rather be…. https://muckrack.com/janderson_news

Aside the obvious propaganda which John works so hard to call out day in day out, here I get to see the front page of the BritNat dailies. That little snidey bit about Nicola Sturgeon, which is based on nothing but the power of suggestion, is a good example of anti truth telling, anti fact. An insult to the many journalists who are persecuted across the globe for telling the truth, as is their job.
If more people knew about the nurses bursary etc in Scotland might they be more inclined to apply, including some from England? England’s Brexit being the elephant in the room, when it comes to fewer people being available from abroad for many crucial jobs in health and social care now. Sorry Scotland, you are at the mercy of the country next door, hmm I wonder what could be done about that…

I think the bursary etc is for Scotland domiciled students but your point about ‘if more people knew’ is well made. The constant reference across all media social and MSM to ‘the NHS’ hides from people in Scotland what is happening here re nurses etc. It also hides from people in England that different choices have been made in other parts of the UK such as Scotland.
I find examples of this day and daily even from people who you might expect would be a bit more clued up about what is happening in different NHS entities within the UK. But no, they use ‘the NHS’ and ‘the UK’ when more accurate language is required

I’ve written to BBC R4 to complain about an Analysis programme on “British Values & Culture” which turned out to be 100% about English values & culture. The only mention of the 3 Devolved Nations was in passing in a contribution by a Geordie interviewee who named them but said nothing about them. My complaint was about the incessant conflation of ‘England’ with ‘UK’ and the resultant confusion experienced by listeners in the devolved nations about weather forecasts, NHS reports and statistics, media schedules etc. This casual indifference also implies that our values, cultures, histories, languages, legal systems, education, politics, parliaments etc, etc are of no consequence. To drive the point home I’ve referenced James Robertson’s classic YouTube piece on ‘The News Where You Are’.
My argument is that there are no defineable British Cultures and Values (nor indeed a single set of English Cultures and Values; their North/South divide and obsession with ‘class’ ensure that) and I thought it very fitting that the gorgeous music played as background to some eulogising about their ‘UK aka England’ was by a Czech composer, Dvorak, smitten with homesickness for his native land while living in the USA!

am sure nursing places are down because of the constant negativity of the NHS by the MSM – it’s a sad reflection on our society that the NHS is not properly supported and reported on by our MSM, otherwise we would be hearing about how although needing reform it is still performing significantly better than the rUK. We would have more positive reporting on bursaries etc as it stands it’s only when students go to College do they learn that bursaries are available – even the school careers teachers appear to be oblivious
