Renewable technologies generate the equivalent of 113% of Scotland’s overall electricity consumption

Renewable technologies generated the equivalent of 113% of Scotland’s overall electricity consumption in 2022, new statistics show.

This is the highest recorded to date, and a 26 percentage point increase compared to 2021.

The Scottish Government is taking action to scale up renewable technologies to transform and expand Scotland’s clean energy generation sector.

It is also working to ensure Scotland maximises the economic benefits the sector will bring through commitments such as providing up to £500million to leverage private investments to support infrastructure and the offshore wind supply chain.

Not of interest, of course, to the media where you are, in Scotland, this from the Scottish government today:

  1. If ever there was a time for Scot Gov to demand a rethink of the UK’s policies on energy distribution and charging it’s now. It wouldn’t alter the need for independence, but a more equitable policy would make life better for the Scottish people in the interim. Where’s the logic in Scotland producing more energy then we need in our country and our people paying a higher tariff than the people in England to whom we export the surplus energy?

    1. Starmer’s much vaunted but becoming increasingly vaguely aspirational green growth policy is based largely on the predicted proceeds from Scottish renewables. So, the Labour Party if it forms the next government is going to hold on to Scotland even more firmly. Expect a lot of Jock-bashing during the election campaign, with much emanating from Scottish Labour.

  2. Scotland gets charged hundreds of millions of pounds to join the english grid to provide cheaper energy to England than we ourselves have!

If this was France, we’d be blocking english roads around Downing St and Westminster with cattle slurry.

  3. “BBC Scotland Business do have lots on beef and cheese” and BBC/Scotland/Politics is pushing UK Business articles on “Ex-Tory peer Michelle Mone’s assets frozen” and “Tax cut promises may need to be rolled back – IFS think tank” to shield James’s embarrassment over his latest SNP-bad propaganda onslaught having failed miserably – At least his efforts boosted the viewing numbers for the actual Covid Inquiry versus his version of events..

The fly in the ointment of increased alternative energy production is that it has nowhere to go once grid capacity is used up – Years of neglected investment in grid improvements may finally be being addressed, but it’s as ever with London management, too little too late.

Imagine what that 113% could have been had SG had the funds to enable energy conservation measures for it’s citizens, simultaneously lifting even more out of poverty and near poverty…

  4. I think this “113%” should be quoted at any and every opportunity by the SG and their MSPs to highlight to the voters how far we have come in developing green electricity, and also to help them understand why nuclear power is absolutely irrelevant, dangerous and not needed in Scotland.

Btw, if I am permitted an aside here: Did anyone notice in the LibDem’s PPB last week 2 references to “dumping/ filling our rivers with sewage in our rivers” by the SNP? Alex C-H was going to “stop them” with the voter’s help!! I was waiting for some/any kind of reaction but haven’t noticed anything thus far.

  5. This is amazing.

Yet Scotland in surplus and nearer the source pays more because of UK Gov policy. Independence would sort that out.

Hickley Point years late and over budget. £39Billion. An absolute disgrace. The UK Gov is spending 13Billion a year on decommissioning nuclear over ten years £130Billion. Increasing over time. Totally unaffordable Nuclear being pursued by the UK Gov. waste being dumped in Scotland. Trident. Contaminated waste dumped in Scotland.

This is the most bitter pill of all to swallow – The justifications from 32 years ago and 14 UK governments later still prevail – Despite the power generation and supply map having changed out of all recognition to what it was on energy privatisation in the 1990s, the “model” is largely unchanged.
