2 out of 3 Scots say Charlie is not their darlin’

From YouGov today:

Only 45% across the UK prefer a monarchy to an elected head of state, at 31% and with don’t knows at 24%.

In Scotland, the figures were 33, 43 and 24.

Only the South had 50% for Charlie and his crew.

The decline since the handover from his mum? In June 22, also from the same pollster, YouGov, this:

Time for the SNP to go full republican?

  1. I think one of the reasons for the trend is, indeed, the death of Queen Elizabeth.

She was monarch for so long that most people could not remember a time without her (except old ‘Georgians’ like what I am!) and so she was accepted simply because she was …. there, like the Clyde, the Grampians and the Cockbridge to Tomintoul Road. In addition she was a deft old trouper as far as the soap opera was concerned.

Chico was always seen as a bit of a wimp and mostly harmless, but, when he became king and people became aware of what this entailed and its relationship to how we are governed, then more people questioned why we are contributing to this flummery. It is part of the myth of Britannia and myths are very potent for the sustaining of imagined communities such as nations. The late Queen, by her longevity was an embodiment of this myth. With her passing, the myth is now seen by more people for its per se mythicalness.

And, for many, Chico and the flummery of his coronation has been a revelation – we are being conned. It is, as Tom Nairn said, “an Enchanted Glass”.

The fact that increasing numbers see the class as cracked and its silvering decayed so that they can see through it rather than it reflecting themselves is a sign that ‘Britain’ is crumbling.

With it, I hope will come the severing of the Siamese twins of Britain-England and that the people of England will realise that they, more than the Irish, Scots and Welsh are dupes of Britannia.

Let us hope that ‘the plain people of England will start to speak’.

  2. The monarchy has been a millstone around the neck of equality in the UK since …forever !
We are told, gushingly by sycophants , that it brings in gazillions in revenue from tourists and foreigners ”love ” our Royalty .But few if any of them would vote for a similar anachronistic and parasitical system of patronage in their own country .
    God Forbid !
Former royal palaces etc in other countries draw in millions of tourists each year without the decidedly dodgy encumbrance of having to delude themselves that having a hereditary Royal Family is helpful in a democracy in the 21stC.
While The French and Russians acted rather aggressively in solving their Royal problem it should be not be beyond our wit to find a suitable place to deposit our completely dysfunctional Royals . Is Rwanda acceptable ?

  3. Let us not agitate against them right now–they are an incentive toward independence.
Expect our colonial media to begin a campaign to boost Charlies popularity.
None of the “Royals” are born in Scotland, or live in Scotland or show any genuine interest in us.
Independence will see them becoming less and less relevant until the NATURAL situation is an elected head of State here.

  4. The monarchy in all its forms simply represent patronage, privilege and a divided social class structure where the rich and famous are treated with deference. Like religion they have no place in a civilised country.

  5. Slim down or bow out. Far too much money is spent on the ‘Royalty’. £400 million. Only time will tell if they will survive. An Independent Scotland might decide to tax them. Or ignore them. Head of the Church ignore the 10 commandments. Masons. There would be less need for charity if they paid their tax.

The King pays 10% tax on £20Million. No corporation or capital gains tax. Worth £Billions. Tax evaders. Along with the rest of them. The Press owned by non Dom tax evaders support the Royals to do the same.

  6. Westminster appears hell bent in not moving from the status quo, a living medieval stage set. What in any wee man’s name is wrong with them.
An e.g., I came across a parliamentary term Chiltern Hundreds. Thinking it might be some back bench club, thought would delve in.

They have an ancient law that states, no MP can resign without good reason. Fine, “I he’s deid right enough. He can leave.” But what to do with the not yet dead, neer do wells and wasters of space?

Well, being fearful of interference, in parliamentary business, from the monarch they also have an ancienter (?) law for protection, “Any MP in receipt of the monarch’s coin will be expelled from this house.” This in 1624 I believe.

Arise Steward and Bailiff of Chiltern Hundreds and as you are in receipt of the monarch’s coin, it’s the bum’s rush for you. Still in use today Johnson, Dorries, Skidmore, were the latest incumbents.

We really need to snip this umbilical link to Westminster, it is an unhealthy attachment.

Sorry for imparting boredom on you, but who else can I bore when snowed in.
