SNP Government praised for keeping your health data out of hands of Labour sponsor US spy-tech firm Palantir

From the Guardian today:

The NHS is to hand a key role in handling patient data and share of a £480m contract to the US spy technology firm Palantir this week, the Guardian can reveal.

NHS England is set to confirm that Palantir’s joint bid with professional services company Accenture to operate the NHS’s new “federated data platform” (FDP) has been successful.

It is preparing to make an announcement on Tuesday that is likely to spark fierce debate about the safety of patient data, public trust in the NHS and Palantir’s suitability to be involved in the FDP. The construction of the platform is the biggest IT contract the NHS has ever awarded.

Peter Thiel, the billionaire chair and founder of Palantir, was criticised in January after he told an Oxford Union debate that British people’s deep affection for the NHS amounted to “Stockholm syndrome”.

At the debate Thiel, who backed Donald Trump’s successful bid for the White House in 2016 and became part of his post-election transition team, also said of the NHS that “in theory, you just rip the whole thing from the ground and start over”. He also claimed the NHS “makes people sick”.

Reading the last two paragraphs you san see the appeal of this company for the current and next UK Government.

In Scotland, as reported here just over two weeks ago:

As far as I can see, there are no suggestions that Palantir is being considered for any role in NHS Scotland.

There’s some detail about Scotland’s National Digital Platform at:

While NHS Scotland does have plans to work with industry partners, only Astra Zeneca UK and Lenus Health have signed a memorandum of understanding. You can read more on this at:

While Lenus Health is a digital consultancy managing patient data, they are compliant with User-Managed Protocols enabling patients to control what data they share and who can access it. You can read more on them at:

At a local level, I see that even the Labour-assisted Tory council in Moray denies any interest in using Palantir: http://www.moray.gov.uk/moray_standard/page_133873.html

Finally, would Labour reverse the decision to use Palantir for NHS England data? See this:

WEAPONS manufacturers, fossil fuel companies, and a contentious spy-tech firm are among the sponsors for this year’s Labour Party conference.

Boeing and Babcock, which both manufacture missiles, and controversial CIA-funded spyware firm Palantir will sponsor fringe events hosted by centre-left media company New Statesman Media Group.

UK-based Babcock has arms deals with the Government and has recently signed a deal with Israel Aerospace Industries, while the owner of Palantir has donated to Donald Trump’s political campaign.

Private health care companies, fossil fuel firms and major banks are also among those paying to have a presence at the event in Liverpool.

So that’s a no?

  1. It wouldn’t matter if Sir Kid Starver’s Labour distanced itself from Palantir , he would renege on this before the Christmas lights were taken down .

  2. There probably is not much profit to be made from patient data on it’s own but being subsequently able to sell it to private American health companies is a definite winner.
Sunak was apparently speaking with American health companies when he was last visiting his Californian home.
Westminster knows that it can no longer fund the health needs of an ageing population through public funds without big increases in taxation, which the various flavours of English Tory parties are not about to do.
So…….they are going to pass the burden on to the individual to do so,either through savings or health insurance plans.
The end of the welfare state.
