As the Labour Party and their media chums pile onto Glasgow’s super-hospital exploiting cynically a small number of deaths perhaps, maybe, linked to or just after a water-born infection which might have maybe possible contributed to those deaths it’s important to put this enormous institution and its performance into a meaningful context.
The funnel plot below, and previous examples reported here, comparing predicted deaths with actual deaths, shows two things in particular:
- No Scottish hospital had a significantly higher standardised mortality ratio than the national average ie all of Scotland’s hospitals are safe places.
- Glasgow’s QEUH is safer than average with, year after year, fewer deaths than its circumstances (poverty, general ill-health, smoking, drinking, poor diet, lack of exercise) predicted.

The funnel plot below shows two things in particular.
- There is more diversity in England’s hospitals with around 10 more than in Scotland with greater death levels than predicted.
- Around 50 English hospitals have worse outcomes than QEUH in Glasgow

Problem with graphs like this …Ambulance chasers ,like Sarwar , don’t give a F*ck !

Reporting Scotland last night covered this and the police investigation. Lisa Summers was in her element bad-mouthing the QEUH and making it sound as if the problems were on-going and deaths still occurring. ‘This troubled building’ was one of her phrases.
Then Sarwar and his ‘crime scene’ and ‘suspects still walking around’ comments which were surely out of order when there is an active investigation.
Passing mention about the inquiry into the earlier problems eg water contamination etc. After the initial session of the inquiry which involved testimony from affected families which was reported day and daily the media has pretty much ignored the inquiry and the factual technical evidence.
Of course no mention of how well the hospital did in the Newsweek poll of UK Hospitals

As commented elsewhere, the Crown Office have requested further investigation on specific issues by Police Scotland, nothing unusual in itself, until HMS James Cook spun this technicality into the Health Board being chief “suspect”….
However obvious the invitation, Inspector Merde Ouiseau was quickly on ze case, instantly fell over a trunk and did serious injury to the truth with ‘crime scene’ and ‘suspects still walking around’ observations…
The Crown Office will doubtless conclude matters immediately after the next GE along with Campervangate, whilst Sarwar is still trying to get the accent right on “Does your dog bite ?”…
I imagine incontinent pigeons will have greeted these theatrics with “Merde…”, much as 99% of Scots…

From the ITV News website dated 7 September 2023 there is this headline: ‘London NHS Foundation Trust charged with corporate manslaughter of 22-year-old’
ITV reports: ‘Charges have been authorised following a Met investigation into the death of Alice Figueiredo at Goodmayes Hospital on 7 July 2015.
‘The CPS authorised the Met to charge North East London NHS Foundation Trust with corporate manslaughter and an offence under section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act.
‘Alice was 22 years old at the time of her death and was a patient at the hospital. An investigation was launched into the death on 7 July 2015.
My point in drawing attention to this recent news item is to note how the ITV article ends: ‘Criminal proceedings are now active and the defendants have the right to a fair trial. Nothing should be shared or reported that could prejudice this process.’

The BBC News website’s article headlined ‘Milly Main’s mother believes she will get justice over hospital death’ included this from Anas Sarwar MSP, among other pejorative statements: “To this day, the suspects are being allowed to walk the crime scene.”
What is Mr Sarwar seeking to imply about the status of the alleged ‘crime scene’ and the likely efficacy of an investigation now of that ‘scene’ by police?
At what point in the justice process do media organisations, politicians and others need to take care when commenting on a particular, active police investigation – is it only after a charge has been brought? If so, the scope for aggregation and amplification of Mr Sarwar’s pejorative interventions by BBC Scotland may be huge and long lasting.
