Before the pandemic in early 2020, NHS Scotland had around 27-28 000 planned operations every month. Since the collapse, during lockdowns, to between 3-4 000 essential procedures, the level has climbed steadily to around 25-26 000 in the last few months.
Of these, cancellations due to lack of staff or resources have fallen to just below pre-pandemic levels at around only 2%. This is a stunning level of resilience and recovery in any system of such scale and complexity. Other cancellations, based on patient choice or medical expertise, cannot be used as negatives.
On a regular basis such clear evidence of excellence is ignored by media.

A personal note John …. Around 14 months ago I got a medical and it was discovered I had a low blood count. From GP to hospital to two Consultants a bone marrow biopsy and loads of blood checks it’s been discovered I have a rare blood cancer. I’ve had two transfusions so far + I’m now getting 2 x chemo injections per day for 7 days ( cost would be $8,000 a shot in the USA!) then a break of 21 days before the next round. The treatment I’ve received from the SNHS has been nothing short of magnificent!

I feel it would be safe to assume that there will be no criticisms from both Labour and Tories of Scotland’s NHS in today’s FMQ’s when the BMA has said this morning that the Welsh NHS is…. to quote ‘Not fit for purpose’ and with hospitals in Wales and England both declaring over capacity incidents. It would however present Humza with an early Xmas present which I hope he makes good use of.

The Guardian reports:
“Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer is “battling to reassert his authority” within his party as he faces “one of the biggest crises of his time” in the job. The paper reports that four shadow ministers are preparing to quit and as many as ten others are also on “resignation watch” because they don’t want to vote against a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. One Labour frontbencher tells the paper that “someone needs to say enough is enough”.
I think surely THIS has to be REAL news that should be headlined in Scotland especially considering so much has been said in respect to the so called (media generated) anticipated resurgence of Labour in Scotland ……I do know that currently Jackie Baillie has been doing her bit in deflection manoeuvres in the media upon the Scottish government via Covid related matters…..which is being given uber prominence though Labour at Holyrood are NOT the official opposition party ….BUT the crisis within Labour via their position on the Israel/Gaza crisis is very much current and worthy news that should be breaking news and too news that is leading in the news where WE are……surely.
Is it not ironic that in all of the efforts made by the Right of the Labour party to convince everyone that Corbyn was anti-Semitic to now find that via Starmer they are now in a position where many Muslims in the UK are becoming convinced he, Starmer, is Islamophobic in siding with Israel and more so with him NOT calling for a ceasefire in Gaza destruction……….karma is a bitch is it NOT.
