Journalism at its worst as 10 000 cancer patients wait too long in England and longer than they would under SNP Government

The so-called ‘Scottish’ Daily Express with its frankly sickening wee lion in the header, headlines the above disgraceful distortion of reality.

Apologies to regular readers for this repeat:

In the quarter ending 30 June 2023, NHS Scotland started treatment for 73.7% of the 4 299 patients referred, within the 62-day standard for urgent suspicion of cancer.

In the same period in NHS England, the comparable figure was only 59.6%.

On this target, NHS Scotland started treatment for 23.6% more on time than NHS England did. This means that 1 014 more urgent cases were treated on time than would have been the case had they lived in England.

Ten times the population in England suggests around 10 000 cancer patients, in just one three-month period, would have been treated on time had they lived in a state where the national government managed the NHS in a manner comparable to the SNP, in Scotland.

  1. The ”English ” Scottish Daily Express and Scottish Daily Mail are what my dad would have found very useful when I was a youngster – cut up and placed in the toilet for their most obvious practical use !

  2. Scandalous that a modern European country is flooded by colonial propaganda from a larger neighbour intent on exploiting its assets, whilst subjugating its people.

  3. This theme has also appeared in an article in The National today (27/09/2023) – “Cancer wait times at unacceptable level”.
This gives the 73.7% figure for Scotland but does not mention the performance of any of the other three health services in the UK and of course has adverse comments from the Labour, Tory and Lib Dem spokespeople.
