‘Now you don’t talk so loud, now you don’t seem so proud’

In the Guardian today:

Former Proud Boys leader sentenced to 22 years over US Capitol attack

Sentencing of Enrique Tarrio caps one of the most significant prosecutions in the investigation into the January 6 attack

The former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio was sentenced to 22 years in prison on Tuesday for his part in the failed plot to keep Donald Trump in power after the 2020 election.

More than 1,100 people have been charged in relation to the Capitol attack. More than 600 have been sentenced, more than half receiving prison terms.

There’s much to be concerned about regarding the USA, not least its overly-aggressive tin-eared foreign policy, but you have to give them credit for pulling things out of the fire here and restoring a basic functioning democracy after the shocking events around the storming of the Capital in 2020.

It was like something from one of those borderline democratic/dictatorship states in South America or in Eastern Europe after the fall of the Wall in Berlin. Shocking to see in the home of Bob Dylan. I’d have asked him ‘How does it feel?

  1. Totally agree, there’s a mix of relief and hope that this assault on democracy is being treated seriously and those involved charged.

It would be good to see a similar focus in UK to restoring the checks and balance measures trashed first by Johnson and his successors. Their blatant disregard for the systems designed to safeguard governance was and still is a disgrace which has left the country in a total mess. There might not have been a physical attack on the parliament but the actions of the Tories and the collusion of a right wing press has had a similar impact on democracy here

  2. Having to live in a Scotland that is subject to the whims of whichever Red or Blue Tory party is currently f*cking up the economy at Westminster feels more like Dylan’s ”Stuck inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues again !”

  3. Tories/ Republicans – in it for themselves, don’t give a f*** about anybody else and believe they have a Devine right to rule, the more moderate voters just don’t get out to vote as they are a scunnered with politics. The jailing of these idiots in the states is right and proper but all it seems to be doing is bolstering the republican vote, oh for a decent media that gave both sides of the story – sadly the UK and the US don’t have that luxury

I would say that this will not be achieved until they prove they have the cojones to put Trump in jail, where every reasonable person knows he should be.

  5. Trump stopped wars. CIA and FBI fraudsters. Biden and his son billionaires making £Millions out of war. Ukraine. Biden son is up on criminal charges. Drug taking, illegal possession of weapons. Getting £Millions from Oil deals etc. laundering public monies through Ukraine. Wasting £Billions of $dollars of public monies. Breaking International agreements. 2014. BAE systems has moved production to Ukraine to supply weaponry to further the military intervention.

Illegal Middle East wars. Blocking democracy and illegally taking Oil. Since Churchill took Persia Oil (Iran). CIA M15, caused havoc and unrest. Spread rumours the PM was homosexual and he was put in jail. The West took all the Oil. The PM had nationalised the production. 1950’s. The records are stored in the US. Westminster illegally supply Saudi Arabia with weapons since the 1960’s. Harold Wilson. Kept secret under the Official secrets Act.

  6. The States have autonomy. Can raise taxes etc. The Federal Gov has power over Defence etc. Supreme Court judges are a Law unto themselves. Break down of universal abortion Law. Now down to the individual States.

Trump lost women’s votes. Appointed a right wing, religious cult judge. The Congress claimed they were fooled when they approved the appointment. An 80 year old right wing coloured judge taking favours from a billionaire friend. The judges are an elite above the Law. No regulation. Regulation is now trying to be put in place by Congress members. Senate election every two years. 2 from each State. 100+. Congress small numbers for 340 million people.

  7. I disagree. If it happened in Russia you would be appalled with the harshness of the sentencing, but somehow because these people were Trump supporters you applaud it. 22 years for what is essentially rioting is outrageous and has no place in a free country.
What goes around comes around. If Scottish nationalists ever riot, will you be demanding 20 year sentences for them, you’ll find plenty of folk on the other side happy to oblige.
