After mechanical faults affect three ferries, a 47 year-old replacement ferry breaks down in Canadian ferry fiasco

The MV Queen of Alberni

Yesterday, we could report that mechanical problems had forced two BC Ferries boats into dry-dock and a third to delay sailings, causing massive disruption for travellers.

Today, the 47 year-old replacement ferry, the MV Queen of Alberni, is also ‘in the shop’ experiencing mechanical problems with its main engine, forcing several sailings to be cancelled: https://vancouverisland.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId=2747831

In the geographically similar, if colder and more stormy, west of Scotland, Calmac is currently running its more than 500 sailings a day at around 97% reliability with only the Oban to Mull route reduced from 20 to 10 sailings per day. https://www.calmac.co.uk/calmac-performance-data-browser?date=28%2F08%2F2023

The average age of a CalMac ferry is 22 years with the oldest 40. The average age of a BC Ferries vessel is 35.
