Starmer could afford university if he was leaving school today but only if he lived in SNP-run Scotland

As often before UK Labour spads don’t worry about how something will read in Scotland.

From a Sky News report in July 2023:

Average student debt three times higher in England than Scotland, new figures show

The SNP, which commissioned the analysis, said young people were being forced into “obscene levels of debt” as it criticised Labour for dropping its pledge to scrap tuition fees.

Average student debt in England is almost £45,000 – three times higher than in Scotland, new figures have revealed.

By comparison, a Scottish student who graduated from one of the nation’s universities in 2022 owed an average of around £15,000.

The figures were released by the House of Commons Library.

  1. London myopia – it’s a common complaint of politicians and media people in ‘The Capital ‘ . The view from London defines the situation in other areas of ”The Nation ” .
    Facts which apply to London /England are accepted as being the norm elsewhere in ‘The Nation ‘.
    When they have school holidays , so does Scotland ;
    when their NHS is failing , so is Scotland’s ;
    when their doctors are striking , so are Scotland’s ;
    when they have filthy water in their rivers , so does Scotland ;
    when their trains are cancelled , so are Scotland’s ;
    when their BBC slavers over England’s Lionesses , so does Scotland’s …

  2. I think you are correct in your observation regarding the attitude of Labour Party advisers. Labour is, essentially, and English/British party and Scotland and Wales are provincial offices and Northern Ireland ….. well, let’s not talk about that because Labour does not stand candidates there and ended its alliance with SDLP because of the latter’s ‘nationalism’.

    Labour leaders were in Scotland last week telling us how Scotland is ‘at the heart’ of its vision for Britain, and, no, you can’t have powers over employment legislation, because we will do it better and, no, you cannot have powers over drugs legislation because you have the worst numbers of drugs deaths and no you cannot have Gender Recognition, because people cannot be trusted to make up their mind and, in any case we have a very socially reactionary polity in England which hates perverts ……

  4. Tuition fees are a significant part of the reasoning in English second home owners in my part of the world, registering them as their primary residence.
    This then allows their offspring to have their fees paid for them.
