The Herald flogging a dead ferry deal in a three car ferry island chain in an economy one fiftieth of Scotland’s

Barely afloat, holed below the water line, in the Herald today:

Shocking! Fiji goes for Scot’s shipbuilding revolution after ScotGov ‘rejection’ The Scots entrepreneur behind the sunk £800m scheme to create a Clyde shipbuilding revolution – has got the nod from Fiji’s prime minister to take his plans there, the Herald on Sunday can reveal.

First, that rejection. I’m guessing the experts at ScotGov, or hired by them, had good reasons to reject but are too polite to tell us. Are catamaran ferries of the size proposed not safe in the high winds so regular on the Scottish island routes?

Second, they may ‘have the nod’ but is the PM of Fiji able to offer them any money to get started? The Herald tells us:

Looking at? Hmmm.

Fiji’s GDP – $4.3 billion.

Scotland’s GDP – $214.25 billion

Fiji car ferry fleet – 3 and none in construction.

Scotland car ferry fleet – 35 and 2 in construction in Scotland.

On car travel in Fiji:

Do not attempt to take a car to another island unless you own it or have made clear special arrangements – most rental companies forbid it and they do prosecute tourists who violate this clause in the contract.

  1. I am told that the Scottish Government rejected proposals by former convict, Conn Mann, to set up a plant to bottle mountain air to export to the polluted city of Beijing.

If we had asked DRoss, he would have shaken his head in disbelief.

  2. Ah, the good old Herald where desperation comes as standard.

You do wonder if Martin Williams who mainly pens the Heralds “Ferry Stories” actually has a proper job somewhere else to fall back on.
