Reports of people in England pulling their own teeth out with pliers have prompted critics to say it’s no better in Scotland.
What do you think?
Are the SNP lying when they say access to dentistry in the poorer parts is 100%?
If your self-dentistry has made it difficult for you to whistle-blow try this technique:

I love your witty headings.
How about, ‘Self-mutilated dentists who are still capable of whistling’.
Always grateful for your informed, fact-supported articles.
Cheers!

BBC Radio 4 is making much of a House of Commons Health Committee report on access to dental services. The coverage in the Today programme made NO mention that the report was focused only on England. Dental services are devolved.
The actual committee report has a footnote on an early page that makes this restricted scope clear but then adds that the ‘problem’ is UK wide. It justifies this by referencing a prior BBC News report (from 2022?) and a YouGov survey from February 2023.
When one checks these two sources – even very quickly – it becomes clear that the situation in Scotland is substantially better than in England, albeit the BBC piece seems to try hard to hide this favourable distinction away!
Regret I don’t have time today to document this in full for TuS: there is a salutary lesson to be exposed here! This is yet another of those situations in which ‘Scotland’ is tarred with England’s brush casually!
With such misrepresentation how on earth can a political party in government in Scotland go about building the trust and support of its electorate if that party is not Tory or Labour? Perhaps that’s the whole point – to counter any momentum in support for the SNP, to make building further support as difficult as possible!

I didn’t hear BBC Scotland radio lunchtime news give listeners any statistics on NHS dentistry in Scotland, relying instead on the account of one man with toothache who was heading up to the Glasgow dentistry hospital.
https://publichealthscotland.scot/publications/dental-statistics-registration-and-participation/dental-statistics-nhs-registration-and-participation-24-january-2023/
95.4% of the Scottish population were registered with an NHS dentist as at 30 September 2022.
As at 30 September 2022, 87.2% of children were registered, compared to 87.4% on 30 September 2021.
Nearly all adults living in the most deprived areas were registered with an NHS dentist in September 2022, compared to 91.9% in the least deprived areas.
The percentage of registered children in the highest and lowest SIMD quintiles reflects the opposite; with 85.3% registration in the most deprived areas and 88.3% in the least deprived areas. This compares with 86.7% and 87.9% respectively, in September 2021.
