NHS England maternity units 21 times more likely to be substandard the those in Scotland

Not being reported by BBC England, any of BBC England’s regions or even tucked away in BBC Health (above) this from the Observer today:

Crisis in NHS maternity units revealed as 21 rated ‘substandard.’ Nearly half of all NHS hospital maternity services covered so far by a national inspection programme have been rated as substandard, the Observer can reveal.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC), which regulates health and care providers in England, began its maternity inspection programme last August after the Ockenden review into the Shropshire maternity scandal, which saw 300 babies left dead or brain damaged by inadequate NHS care.

An Observer analysis of the CQC inspection shows that 45 maternity services have so far been given a rating under the new inspection programme, with six declared inadequate and another 15 rated as “requires improvement”. Twenty-three have been rated as good and just one as outstanding, with four improving.

Imagine even one Scottish maternity unit being declared ‘substandard’ at any time since the SNP came to power? Imagine 300 dead babies in one health board area!?

So, try searching for ‘Scotland maternity inspections fail substandard.’

The word ‘Scotland’ will be quickly dropped and you’ll just get the same Guardian article above and other versions of the same scandal in NHS England, until on the second page of hits, steady my precious at Reporting Scotland:

Aberdeen Maternity Hospital slammed in report in the Scotsman on October 29th…….wait for it…..2013! for…..wait for it……one dirty room.

I know whitabootery but imagine it was the other way round like our drug deaths.

Footnote: I know 21:0 really means things are infinitely better in Scotland but I thought some readers might think that was pushing it.

  1. I imagine this is a long-term problem.

When I was expecting my daughter over 30 years ago I moved down to Manchester to stay closer to my family. (Long story, won’t bore you). I registered to give birth at what was acknowledged to be the best Maternity Hospital in the NW of England.

At my first appointment, on hearing I’d moved from Aberdeen, the midwife said “What on earth are you doing down here? They’re light years ahead of us up there!

After I’d explained my situation she said “Oh well. I suppose you’ve had to then…”

The care I received was excellent btw – more power to the staff. But they still acknowledged we were better staffed and equipped, even then.
