Protecting Scottish Labour as their policy ‘spooks’ North Sea energy investors

Above, what the headline should have said. Below what BBC Scotland chose:

UK could be starved of energy, says North Sea boss

You have to read beyond the headline to see:

The UK is at risk of being “starved” of North Sea energy leaving it reliant on imports, a major oil and gas producer has told the BBC.

Ithaca Energy said Labour’s pledge to ban new oil and gas exploration in the North Sea and current taxation policy was “spooking” investors.

Last week, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said a Labour government would not grant licences to explore new fields in the North Sea, saying it would be an “historic mistake” to wait until UK oil and gas runs out.

But Gilad Myerson, executive chairman of Ithaca, said the move would threaten the UK’s energy security.

“By a new government imagining they’ll be able to stop licences and oil development in the UK, ultimately what that means is that they’ll be starving the UK of energy, and it will become very dependent on energy from abroad,” he said.

Imagine that was an SNP election manifesto policy statement? Might it make the headline? Replace Labour with SNP – easy to imagine that based on what we read in 2014.

  1. GET US OUT OF THIS CORRUPT INCOMPETENT UNION

NOW LABOUR WANT TO REMOVE A VITAL PART OF SCOTLANDS ASSETS
WHICH WILL STOP SCOTLAND BUILDING ITS COUNTRY

  2. Starmer is blathering it’s just another one of his fake promises there is no way Labour would stop North Sea gas and oil exploration because it’s income for Westminster and there are many many major oil and gas shareholders sitting in Westminster who would ensure it does not happen.

Starmer is saying this as a swipe at Scottish independence a threat that he is the controller and will make the decisions should Labour get into government.

  3. It’s only this particular outfit and individual in the oil and gas sector being spooked, not the investors, and there is not a chance in hell of the UK being “starved of energy” as Gilad Myerson opines.
Interestingly, Gilad Myerson has more jobs than DRoss https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/officers/m8hW6gyJkwG0MxvngUBufCSqfE0/appointments

Having watched the excellent “SCOTONOMICS Ep 75: The Economics of the Climate Crisis” with the refreshingly blunt Steve Keen as guest, I’m pretty sure Myerson would fall into the same “moron” category as Keen bestows so freely on other myopics.

  4. What’s it got to do with Labour. Scottish assets, revenues and resources mismanaged and wasted by Westminster sycophants. Not voted for in Scotland. The gross ignorance, arrogance and mismanagement by Westminster. No Democracy outvoted 10 to 1. The UK the most unequal place in the world.

Starmer another useless incompetent. Supported austerity. Brexit another disaster wasting £Billions.

Labour Illegal wars, financial fraud and tax evasion.

  5. The ‘exploration’ has been ongoing & will be for some time…they have tech to find the oil & gas and know exactly where it is & how much is there, they already know what’s there & EngGov ain’t gonna leave it in the ground, no matter which Tory party is in power at WM. The story of investors being put off is total bllx.
Quite frankly, I wish the oil would run out…for many reasons, Scotland doesn’t need it, it’s millstone around Scotland’s neck, sad because there is so much more going for Scotland than oil and gas, if only it wasn’t shackled to England. I know I sound all Green now, yikes!
