Correction: Westminster knew it prioritised NHS ‘to detriment of care homes’ in England

The often otherwise excellent, Open Democracy, has this today:

UK knew it prioritised NHS ‘to detriment of care homes’

It’s another Anglocentric report apparently ignorant of the very different actions by the SNP Government in Scotland.

In May 2021, we had:

The above graph revealing starkly the cost in lives of the failure in England to fully implement the JCVI guidance and vaccinate care home residents before all other groups was compiled by Na Sirf Musiqi https://twitter.com/nasirfmusiqi from official sources.

It’s a story never told on MSM. It’s a far greater sin than wasting money on wallpaper.

This shows the impact of the vaccinations as the began to confer immunity on many in Scottish care homes from the middle of January 2021:

Another story never told.

Before that, in April 2021, we had:

In the First Wave in 2020, research from the University of Stirling:

Care homes in England experienced the highest increase in excess deaths at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic compared to those in the rest of the UK, according to new research. A study – co-ordinated from the University of Stirling’s Management School – found that care homes in England recorded a 79 percent increase in excess deaths, compared to 66 percent in Wales, 62 percent in Scotland and 46 percent in Northern Ireland.

https://www.stir.ac.uk/news/2020/august-2020-news/care-homes-in-england-had-greatest-increase-in-excess-deaths-at-height-of-the-covid-19-pandemic/

In the second wave in 2021, there was more of the same tragedy:

From the 1st of January 2021 until the 26th February, 9 088 care home residents in England died from confirmed Covid-19.

From the 1st of January 2021 until the 28th February, 532 care home residents in Scotland died from confirmed Covid-19.

England has ten times the population so pro-rata might have been expected to have ten times as many deaths, 5 320, but had around 3 700 more.

Had NHS England, followed the JCVI advice and vaccinated care home residents as a priority above all others, 3 700 lives might have been saved.

Who told them not to follow the JCVI advice? Who told NHS Scotland to follow it?

We know. Will the UK media tell everyone else?

  1. O/T…

I am certain as can be that “Dame” Baillie of that ilk had her flabber gasted in much the same way as I was utterly dumbfooner’t and struck almost dumb by the announcement of the King of old Engurland.

I now await the post with great anticipation as—if Oor Jaikie can be upgraded to Damehood for her dismal contribution to Scottish life, then so can little old me—though I would decline–obviously.

  2. Do you see the graph for 01/01/2021? For the only occasion in the period covered by the graph Scotland has the highest rate of Covid infections. That is all the Scottish media and Dame Jackie are interested in.

With the Baroness Colonel Davidson, Dame Jackie and ‘Sir’ Keir we really need to know our place. And I see ‘we’ have awarded Queen Camilla “Scotland’s highest honour”. I do not remember being consulted on that one.

  3. Let us not forget that whilst England pushed ahead to vaccinate the ‘low hanging fruit’ and as a result having initial higher vaccination figures than the rest, this was expolited to attack The SNP as being too slow. Meanwhile we were getting on with vaccinating the most vulnerable as per the JCVI advice and soon pulled ahead. The English never caught up because they were too Boorish to follow simple advice.

Let us ALSO remember how at the very start of the pandemic authorities in England instructed PPE stockists in England who normally supplied to the whole of Britain NOT to supply to care homes outwith England. They hoarded available supply for themselves.

  4. I’m afraid Open democracy is really not excellent. I ditched them and I can’t remember the specifics but they had put out an article where they lumped Scotland in with the English Uk government that was completely misleading, when I pointed it out there was no response. They are not the only ones to omit facts about Scotland’s far better performance in matters of policy, or to leave out facts about reserved powers for example. I think it was 38degrees who put out a petition demanding that the ‘Scottish MOD’ stop killing whales in Scottish waters. Many many thousands signed the petition, which was aimed at the Scottish government.

These organisations are funded by the public via donations, it’s not good enough that they omit facts that are crucial to the democratic process, in order for people to make informed choices. Whether it’s through ignorance or deliberate, they need to be called out for it because they do have influence, and a heck of alot of followers.
