‘8% of the population but only 2.5% of the police taser firing’
It’s all over the English media but from BBC UK today:
The use of Taser stun guns by police and England and Wales reached a record high last year, Home Office figures show. They were deployed in 23,000 incidents in the 12 months to the end of March – up by more than a third on the previous year and double the 2016 total. The weapons – which deliver a high-voltage electric shock – were fired on 2,500 occasions between April 2018 and March 2019, which is thought to be the highest number recorded.

What is the situation in Scotland, we wonder? Luckily the Daily Record had been on it for us back in February with the above headline employing imaginative ‘percentagisation’:
Police Scotland’s use of Tasers on suspects has risen by 400 per cent in three years, figures have revealed. Officers deployed the devices on members of the public 65 times during a 12-month period until March last year. The figure compares to 27 the previous year and 13 occasions in 2016. Human rights group Amnesty International expressed concern over the upward trend and said it was worried Taser usage was becoming part of “day-to-day policing” in Scotland.

‘Deployed’ doesn’t mean ‘used’ but never mind. If we take the 2 500 cases of firing in England and Wales and accept the 65 cases in Scotland all involved firing, we discover that Scotland has around 8% of the UK population but only 2.5% of the taser firing. Or, you are more than three times as likely to be tasered in England or Wales as in Scotland?
Has Amnesty International described the level of tasering in England and Wales as becoming part of ‘hour-by-hour policing’ there? Thought not.
Other Police Scotland stories missed:

Great stuff Prof. , good to see this stuff in black and white, and as far as I can see you are the only one putting these stats out . There was a time , (before the Dugdale fiasco ) , you would have read these kind of stats on the Wings website as well , but these days are long gone , the Rev . is so much down the SNP Baad road now he should have a whole page to himself in the Daily Express .

A few years back I watched a young copper tackle a big baldy bruiser in Edinburgh’s High Street. I arrived in time to see two policemen and a policewoman, closing on a bunch of brutals. Then the biggest of them lunged at the youngest policeman. The others all stood back leaving them too it. The other two police stood casually chatting glancing over at the fray like it was a foregone conclusion the young copper would win…which he did. The bruiser didn’t get a single blow in (no truncheon was used) before he was pinned down then cuffed, all by himself. It was a treat to see a real expert at work. I really hoped some of the onlookers were American so they could see how Scottish police handle violent people, unlike their police where by this time dozens of cops would’ve piled on top…-you’ve seen it.
