As the opposition parties and our MSM feast on unsubstantiated scare stories about the QEUH, it’s worth looking at real evidence of how well it is doing.
No Scottish hospital has a higher than expected mortality rate and QEUH has one of the lower scores in Scotland, at 4.7% compared to the average of 4.95%.
In England, 11 trusts had higher than predicted mortality with, for example, Norfolk and Norwich having 505 more deaths than the 2 600 predicted. QEUH had nearly 300 fewer deaths than the 3 225 predicted.
Readers may remember that NHS Scotland has nearly twice as many beds and nurses than NHS England.

Yesterday, on Reporting Scotland, we had Lisa Summers outside QEUH, ostensibly to report on the current enquiry into various issues at a number of hospitals, but, of course, devoted a lot of time to reprising the various ‘horror’ stories.
There is never anything deeply informative or constructive about the reporting. BBC Scotland does not want any success or improvement; they want to complain and blame.

Aye, such OB was inevitable after their “Scottish hospitals inquiry: What is being investigated?” article on which I’d commented earlier.
I have to guess that with Pacific Quay (and the SO ?) having devoted so much time and effort to creating and nurturing the original propaganda campaign to no political or public avail, they are loathe to write it off the investment.

Anas Sarwar has made a fair bit of the running on the QEUH. Now that he gained council seats due to Tories switching he will use this to boost his unionist credentials.

Aye, but Sarwar’s infamous “What about Millie Mae ?” at the last GE sunk him with the public in terms of public credibility as much as it had the BBC over the entire QEUH saga. In the media and political bubble he inhabits, he has committed to a lie the public can see and from which he cannot backtrack. Ditto Glenn Campbell, James Cook, etc., etc..
To Scots trying simply to get by, Sarwar is but another rich boy “playing” politics, as if Westminster had not already exposed the stupidity of that convention.
Sarwar set out to impress Dad, Scots rightly expected so much more of Labour, and I’ve no doubt whatever when IR2 arrives he will be toast…

O/T Published today (10 May) are the latest performance data for A&E waiting times in NHS Scotland. Nothing appearing (yet!) on the BBC News website – no headline, no article. I wonder why?
In the week ending 1 May, 2022 compliance with the 4 hour waiting time target improved to 71.6%. This is the best performance in the past c.3 months and follows steady improvement across recent weeks.
Notably, NHS Tayside which had 1,597 ‘attendances’ in the week attained a 92% performance against the 4 hour target. (Still puzzled why health journalists and opposition politicians don’t press the obvious question: if Tayside can achieve this, why does no other major health board covering a large centre of population even come close?)
Across the whole of NHS Scotland, the number of patients waiting over 4, 8 or 12 hours is also down.
For relevant context. in this latest weekly report attendances at A&E reached 25,692. This number has climbed steeply and near consistently from 18,946 in the week to 26 December 2021. This increasing demand coupled with the improvements in waiting times merits favourable mention by a media outlet such as BBC Scotland which has devoted so much effort to negative reporting about NHS Scotland for so long.

For perspective, in the latest performance data for equivalent A&E departments in NHS England (for month of March 2022), just 58.6 % of ‘attendances’ complied with the 4 hour waiting time target. This was the lowest performance since the collection of waiting time data began.

Thanks John it is really good to be able to read your blog again. I had missed your injections of reality into the misrepresentations we get in much of the media. I’d also missed your earlier article you linked to above on the relative numbers of nurses and beds in Scotland compared to England. That is some difference. Oh that the MSM would give that kind of context.
