SNP has accused Boris Johnson of “giving the green light” to rampant Tory sleaze and corruption

From: SNP Westminster Press Office:

The SNP has accused Boris Johnson of “giving the green light” to rampant Tory sleaze and corruption, after a statement today from Geoffrey Cox revealed that the Tory chief whip approved steps for Cox to take advantage of lockdown rules to vote in the Commons by proxy so that he could go to the Caribbean to work.

In his statement responding to the mounting criticism over his decision to spend up to a month in the British Virgin Islands earning hundreds of thousands of pounds while working to defend the tax haven against a Foreign Office inquiry into corruption, Geoffrey Cox stated: “As to the use of the proxy, prior to his visit to the BVI, he consulted the Chief Whip specifically on this issue and was advised that it was appropriate.”

Commenting, the SNP’s Westminster Deputy leader Kirsten Oswald MP said:

“The stench of sleaze surrounding Boris Johnson’s broken Tory government is unbearable.

“The statement from the latest scandal-hit Tory MP Geoffrey Cox makes clear that the Tory chief whip was specifically consulted and approved steps for Cox to take advantage of lockdown rules and vote by proxy while he was in the Caribbean earning hundreds of thousands of pounds.

“It’s beyond any doubt that Boris Johnson’s Tory government is giving the green light to rampant Tory sleaze and corruption.

“The sheer number of Tory MPs embroiled in sleaze is staggering and cannot go unchallenged.

“From being in the Caribbean rather than the Commons, lobbying for firms, lucrative Covid contracts for friends and party donors, cash for curtains, texts for tax breaks, stuffing the House of Lords with cronies, or luxury holidays paid for by mystery donors – the Tories are rotten to the core, out of control, and will get rid of all scrutiny in order to protect their own interests.

“Westminster is broken beyond repair. It’s beyond any doubt that the only way to escape the rampant Tory corruption, cronyism and sleaze is by becoming an independent country.”

  2. But… Geoffrey Cox was doing ESSENTIAL business in the BVI . He was ensuring that all monies secreted in these tax-free accounts were safe from the HMRC and so saving many , many Tory ( and others – your Maj – wink , wink ! ) a nasty tax bill .

Me thinks it was more to do with that the BVI just like the Native American Indian when challenging white colonial
      Supremacy
That your tracks are well brushed out
In the event of any investigations
Never shall you find the source of from whom and where it comes and goes from
Especially now that the EU has deals in place that can force BVI to show them who, where and how the tracks were made

  3. Its not a GREEN light.

Its a lighthouse-sized RED light led by a man, bought and paid for in pounds, rubbles and kind……… and a Cabinet of brown envelope cardboard cut-outs.

  4. Yes Minister was definitely right on the money with their portrayal of the British state and how it operates.
The enemy of the state are the British people from whom everything must be kept secret lest they find out what their government is really up to.
Lies, deceit, secrecy, stealth and the venality of it’s public servants.
That is how Westminster operates and it is only the complicity of the British press which prevents the people from becoming aware and rebelling against their masters.
It has probably been like this for ever but only now becoming public knowledge due to an administration which thinks it is untouchable and has no need to care about public opinion.

    1. I noticed that the BBC had taken Yes Minister off-air. Probably because the episodes were more like a documentary in the current climate than a sit-com.
