Only this morning, Nick Allen of the British Meat Processors Association (BMPA) told Radio 4’s Farming Today of yet another negative consequence of Brexit and of the UK Government’s post-Brexit immigration policy.
The labour shortage in the UK’s meat processing sector is now forcing British meat companies to pay EU processors to do the cutting and packing work that should be happening in the UK.
Carcases are being exported from the UK to Ireland or The Netherlands. They are processed there before being re-imported to the UK for sale to consumers. So the problem is not just with a shortage of workers in abbatoirs.
The BMPA explains: ‘That’s valuable productive capacity and tax revenue leaking out of Britain and benefitting the EU. It’s also adding around £1500 per lorry load due to higher post-Brexit freight and customs costs, which will inevitably end up translating into higher food prices for British consumers.’
The BMPA chooses the correct word here: ‘This ABSURD situation serves to highlight the root cause of the problem. There are labour shortages throughout Europe. However, while Ireland and the Netherlands, where much of this meat is going, have access to a huge pool of EU labour and the ability to recruit from further afield, UK immigration policy is starving our country of workers.
‘And, with the industry struggling to cope with a 15000 worker shortfall, the 800 emergency visas (for pork butchers only) won’t solve this.’

Pigs are highly intelligent, and genetically quite close to humans as well.
Anyone inflicting pain, and torture on any animal, as humans like to call them are the lowest of the low. I often wonder what people on their deathbeds think and feel, having spent their lives inflicting pain and abuse on other beings, I know it sounds weird. I cannot stand cruelty agianst innocents nevermind anyone else.
