Another ‘Windrush’ scandal?

Please leave my town′: Polite anti-Boris Johnson greeting goes viral | Digital Culture | DW | 06.09.2019

Boris Johnson in 2019:

“I want, therefore, to repeat unequivocally our guarantee to the 3.2 million EU nationals now living and working among us. I thank them for their contribution to our society and for their patience, and I can assure them that they will have the absolute certainty for the right to live and remain.”

The SNP has said the UK government’s EU Settlement Scheme deadline is “another Tory Windrush scandal waiting to happen”.

Speaking at Prime Ministers Questions, Ian Blackford urged Boris Johnson to scrap the deadline and introduce automatically granted settled status – as he promised during the EU referendum.

The SNP Westminster Leader said “hundreds of thousands of EU nationals have been left in limbo” and warned the Prime Minister’s legacy would be “the ridiculous removal of our NHS staff, our local community workers, our teachers and many more who have made their homes here” if the UK government proceeds with their hard deadline.

During the 2016 EU referendum, Boris Johnson made a commitment that “EU citizens will automatically be granted indefinite leave to remain in the UK”. In July 2019, he promised EU nationals living in the UK “will have absolute certainty for the right to live and remain.”

Commenting, SNP Westminster Leader Ian Blackford MP said:

“The UK government’s EU settlement scheme deadline is another Tory Windrush scandal waiting to happen.

“In 2019, the Prime Minister gave an unequivocal guarantee that EU nationals living in the UK “will have absolute certainty for the right to live and remain”.

“Yet, less than two years later, hundreds of thousands of EU nationals have been left in limbo, including thousands of children.

“While the settlement scheme deadline falls today, we know there are hundreds of thousands of unprocessed cases. It is simply unacceptable that their rights will be diminished by the failures of this government.

“The Tory government has caused a backlog of cases because of delays on decisions, missing paperwork and other problems with the scheme.

“Overnight thousands of our friends and neighbours could become illegal immigrants. They are living in fear for their jobs, their families, their livelihoods – and all because the Prime Minister won’t keep his word.

“We know all too well the experience of the UK government’s Home Office – dawn raids, vulnerable people deported, and a hostile environment for the Windrush generation.

“The UK government is causing EU citizens untold stress. One woman who has been in the UK 44 years says she feels suicidal. Another says she feels like a third-rate citizen. That is shameful.

“Scotland’s message to EU citizens is you’re welcome here, we want you to stay, this is your home.

“The UK government must do the right thing – scrap the deadline and introduce automatically granted settled status. Or the Prime Minister’s legacy will be the ridiculous removal of our NHS staff, teachers, local community workers, and many more who have made their homes here.”

Statement by Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and Priti Patel (June 2016)

“There will be no change for EU citizens already lawfully resident in the UK. These EU citizens will automatically be granted indefinite leave to remain in the UK  and will be treated no less favourably than they are at present.”

‘Boris Johnson pledges ‘absolute certainty’ for Europeans living in UK’ (July 2019)

“I want, therefore, to repeat unequivocally our guarantee to the 3.2 million EU nationals now living and working among us. I thank them for their contribution to our society and for their patience, and I can assure them that they will have the absolute certainty for the right to live and remain.”

  1. Haha—Boris would only show concern if their was an shortage of @rselickers and Russian Oligarch’s wanting to fund the Tory party.

“And who will bid “£100,000 to play tennis with Boris”?

“And £40,000 to dine with Dame Ruthie Von Plunker”.

“Last chance now, there could be a Peerage in it for you”!

“You can pay in roubles, dollars or bit-coins, we dont mind”!

  2. This man tells lies without any qualms and, when confronted shrugs and smiles and splutters. But he is a character, isn’t he?????

  3. The consquences of the Tory lies, of which Ian Blakcford talks, describes the nigh on fascism inhabiting the halls of WM, terrifying to think people are now imprisoned in this backward isolationist backward so called UK. Brrr it’s very chilly this summer.

  4. English Torydum simply hasn’t adequately responded to two seismic events in human history, Darwin’s theory of evolution and the Holocaust. Which taught the law the vital importance of retaining coherence with universal practical reason, a.k.a. the Natural law. As this provides logical checks and balances that prevent legal excess and despotic rule. Unfortunately, Westminster considers itself above the Natural law, so what we are witnessing is the emergence of far-right English nationalism as the new model of constitutional democracy in Britain. Which is certainly a scandal, IMHO.

  5. Aside the Prime Malingerer’s turtle impression there’s little of merit to these Tory assurances, they ain’t worth the paper they’re not written on…

I’ve had time to speak to folks who returned here, some after 20 years living and working in England (predominantly London), and not one of them would ever go back even to visit despite now living in their now unfamiliar native land.. The land of opportunity, England has become to them a nightmare even compared to next door…

I was strangely reminded of those observations by the Chris Witty fiasco, a couple of loud-mouthed arrogant little shits harassing Witty because they could, no other justification required, we ara people…

Though the vast majority of England would be equally repulsed by the Witty episode, they do so quietly, they don’t kick up a stink, they grumble, same as they do over Johnson, Patel, Gove, etc., etc.. And so the City of London Shambles moves on…
Brexit opened a pandora’s box of exceptionalism in England, and the farther Scotland are away from the epicentre of what will most assuredly come, the better….

  6. From a post-colonial perspective, English Torydum articulates culturally informed paternalistic chauvinism, a.k.a. the will of man grounded in a sense of supremacy and white entitlement. IMHO, its best Scotland does not follow their practice.

  7. I’m honestly not the pushy type and I wouldn’t be making a public spectacle of myself if I didn’t know a bit about how to support sustainable open democracy through the law. I also know a bit about how to overcome the Cartersean world-view that characterises western culture’s stubbourn attachment to the belief that the mind is separate from the body. Which simply isn’t compatible with a scientific understanding of human anatomy, brain science, or contemporary linguistic theory. I’ve also noticed some confusion on Scottish twitter, over what constitutes blood-and-soil nationalism. Which simply isn’t helpful.
