The SNP has criticised Boris Johnson’s plans to disenfranchise thousands of voters by imposing new ‘Trump-like’ voter suppression measures – including requiring voters to show photo ID at Westminster elections – labelling it “blatant Tory voter suppression”.
Following today’s Queen Speech, SNP Westminster Deputy Leader, Kirsten Oswald MP, condemned the proposal which the SNP believe will deter lower income, ethnic minority, and younger people from voting – groups that are less likely to vote Tory.
The SNP has pledged it will reject any such measures for Scottish elections and referendums. Instead, the SNP government is focused on measures to extend the franchise and encourage turnout.
The SNP has already introduced votes for 16 and 17-year-olds, refugees, and foreign nationals with leave to remain. The Scottish election last week had the highest turnout in the history of devolution.
Commenting, SNP Westminster Depute Leader, Kirsten Oswald MP, said:
“Boris Johnson’s Trump-like plans to disenfranchise thousands of voters across Scotland and the UK are an act of blatant Tory voter suppression – and must be stopped.
“There is a very real danger that many lower income, ethnic minority, and younger people will be prevented from voting to fix a problem that doesn’t exist. These laws are designed to suppress votes among groups that traditionally vote against the Tories. It’s a disgrace.
“The SNP is clear – we will reject any such measures for Scottish elections. Instead of suppressing votes, the SNP government is focused on extending the franchise and encouraging higher turnout, including by introducing votes for 16 and 17-year-olds, refugees, and foreign nationals with leave to remain.
“Instead of running scared of democracy and trying to curtail the voting rights of millions of people, the Tory government should follow Scotland’s lead.
“The SNP government will continue to stand up and defend those who, time and again, are discriminated against by this UK Tory government. We will continue to be the voice for those who have none.”

Seems like England’s right wing Tories are taking a leaf out of the GOP Trump supporting states in the USA’s election winning strategy handbook.
In their case,the aim is to disenfranchise blacks who vote for the Democrats.
Let’s hope we do not have to suffer another rigged Westminster election.

There has been plenty of commentary to the effect that unionist councils would not support a “wildcat” referendum. Now the foot is in the other shoe… SNP councils must refuse to support any election where the tolies are so blatantly trying to disenfranchised so many. No exclusive elections here thanks very much. Civil disobedience starts here.

I listened to a live chat yesterday by a YouTuber who is Irish and who lives in Italy.
His point being that in Italy everyone is required to carry ID, but it’s provided for free unlike the Tory scheme.

Aye, the point Max raises applies across most if not all of Europe, in the Estonian case they went a lot further with what that unique ID can do, impressively so.
As you rightly point however none pay for it, but Tories got do what they always do for their great God “NothingIsFree”.
