UK has 3rd highest coronavirus death rate in Europe and equal to China

In Euronews at 13.44pm yesterday:

‘The United Kingdom has one of the highest coronavirus death rates in the world, latest data reveals. It has reported 104 deaths and 2,626 total cases of COVID-19 up to 17 March, meaning a fatality rate of around 40 per 1,000 infections – similar to China’s. When compared to all countries that have reported more than 1,000 cases, it is the third highest in Europe and the fifth highest overall.’

At the same time, the NHS Scotland fatality rate was only 13 per 1 000 infections, less than a third of the UK rate.

However, the Scottish rate, today, has risen to 6 in 266 cases or 22 per 1 000 infections, just over half the UK figure. The UK rate has climbed slightly to 41 per 1 000 today.

Serious questions must be asked about the record of the Conservative and Unionist Party in managing NHS England over more than a decade.

  1. Worse to come, I would guess.
We lost time with the crazy “mitigation” phase, and now the refusal to lockdown London, or to curb movement to and from the Capital, will come back to haunt us.

  2. Italy is doing rather poorly unfortunately, I do hope they have a slow down soon. Good news from China that their lock downs seem to have worked for slowing the spread – people are, of course, sceptical about news from China, but they seem to have been fairly open about this one so I hope that continues to be the case.

My daily dose of the BBC via radio Scotland had Kate our master vaccine producer on this morning and she was very positive that the vaccine CAN be produced, but it still takes time to go through proper testing (you don’t want to end up with liver damage or something a year down the line!). She also said a lot of positive things about other therapies (anti-virals) that are being developed & those could have a shorter time scale for being distributed. She did emphasise the importance of testing for covid-19, that it was right to get health workers tested as soon as possible, and hoped there would soon be things like home test kits that were easy to use.

It’s not really possible to have ratios like the above when no one actually knows how many people are infected. If we are only testing people ill enough to be admitted to hospital, I suspect the ratio is much smaller. Without knowing how much testing is being done in other countries I would be reluctant to do a comparison too.

It’s tough times indeed with everything being disrupted. Some people have postulated that it could be beneficial to the environment with the reduced travel, and may help for us adjusting to more environmentally friendly ways of living in the future. I hope everyone is fully stocked up with toilet roll now, and maybe I’ll get to buy some when I’m down to my last roll? (I usually do a two-rolls-left advance buy)

Are these not ratios of the number of deaths to the number hospitalised?

      1. It says in the first paragraph ‘total’ cases – but I suppose that could be total hospitalised cases. Not very clear, and I didn’t read the report.

Any chance you could focus a little less on death? I think that’s all the MSM are focusing on so I know it’s difficult, but there must be more news out there? There seems to be chaos in English court systems, while Scottish courts are being given guidance? Is guidance on kids exams better? How much cleaner is our air with reduced travel? Richard Branson has been a complete shit to his Virgin Atlantic customers, but the likes of Home Bargains are being the dream employer?

Thought I was focusing on bias by omission.

Other stuff. Yes. I like it. Send me some. Ludo probably on it?

      1. I know, I know, you are doing what you usually do and it’s useful – but people can’t take any more focus on death as a subject, because it has all got a bit too real & I think anxiety will be seriously on the rise – so some alternatives, there is more being reported than just death rates too surely – the endlessly changing gov’t instruction, the poor response of government to business needs and the economy – the contingency bill!! They must be reporting that?

I’m still under the weather, but now that the Alex Salmond trial is nearly done I’ll need to find new distractions soon so can do more raking rather than skimming – it’s just that I can’t compare to MSM because I don’t read any. I think Ludo will be very busy for the foreseeable future (I believe he mentioned working in the health service in some capacity at one time).

I would try and omit the word ‘death’ from most of your articles – you might lose readers because there is only so much folk can take. How much of the MSM constant scares are making people more compliant? Approval of uk gov’t up? Oh yes, let them have two years of overarching emergency powers (and us, no civil liberties)? We expect a vaccine at the latest, very latest, in 18 months, why would gov’t need 2 years? There are tons of questions to be asked. We are all going through huge changes in how we are living, and at sea not really knowing the best thing to do on any one thing, so some things we can be certain about (not death!!) would be good.

Say if the indyref had been called for this year, I know that’s fantastical thinking, but imagine IF, then it would have been postponed, but when do you think it would have been plausible to postpone it to – would we be 2022 or 2023 anyway do you think? Or later? Or if we get the vaccine this year and get everyone sorted in sharp order, is it plausible for 2021?

    Evidence?

Averaging around 6 000 per day over last few days up c 2000 from preCV days. Only Salmond stories competing with these.

    1. Oh. I guess everyone is obsessing too then! Fair enough. I admit maybe it’s just me that wants a change of subject away from death and more death. And I see Ludo is getting some good info together too. So I was wrong on both counts!

      1. I can’t see your facial expression! I’ll admit to being a bit OCD and just going for things. Genuinely always trying to go for the throat of the MSM. Some effing prof! Genuinely appreciate the broadening and deepening you and the others are bringing and its effect on increasing audience over last year or so.
