Glasgow to host largest summit ever in UK

From the BBC website yesterday:

A major United Nations climate change summit will take place in Glasgow. Up to 30,000 delegates are expected to attend the event at Glasgow’s Scottish Events Campus (SEC) at the end of next year. Glasgow will host the main COP summit while Italy will host preparatory events and a significant youth event, as part of the agreement. The conference has been described as the most important gathering on climate change since the Paris agreement was signed in 2015. Lasting for two weeks, it would be the largest summit the UK has ever hosted, with up to 200 world leaders expected to attend for the final weekend. 2020’s conference is seen as a major crossroads in the battle against global climate change. It will likely be held just after the next US presidential election.

Earlier evidence that Glasgow is ‘going places’, so to speak, has been reported here:

  1. BBC Scotland do not know how to respond to this. When it was announced that Glasgow was the likely location of the conference, BBC Scotland’s initial report focussed on the fact that Police Scotland had announced that they would seek additional funding from Holyrood and Westminster to enable them to provide security. It was a ‘dogwhistle’ (more a ‘toot’ than a ‘whistle’) that we are too wee to manage this ourselves without the help of the rest of the UK.

In addition, this is going to provide ‘that Nicla Sturgeon’, as the head of government, to appear on the international stage with Heads of State! Expect a series of pieces and actions to put her in her place, such as Mr Jeremy Rhymes-with-a Nasty-Word’s petty action as Foreign Secretary in denying Ms Sturgeon the assistance of embassy staff when on a visit to Europe.

They did not talk much about the actual theme of the conference – climate change. Despite the BBC UK’s decision that in climate change discussions there is no need to invoke the ‘principle of balance’ by having climate change deniers on the programmes, BBC Scotland still has such people on any discussion about carbon reduction.
